Dental endodontics: everything you need to know
Endodontics is one of the most common dental procedures in cosmetic dentistry. For this reason, in this post, we are going to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about this type of treatment that we carry out in our dental clinic in Granollers.
What
is endodontics and when is it necessary?
Endodontics
of endo (interior) and odontoid (tooth) is characterized by being a
conservative procedure through which the dental pulp or the nerve of the tooth
is extracted, to later proceed to seal the pulp canal.
This
treatment is normally carried out when there are untreated cavities for a long
period that affect the internal pulp of the tooth. Dental trauma is another
possible reason why a root canal may be necessary.
Although
it is very rare, certain patients who suffer from bruxism can damage the dental
pulp due to the continuous rubbing of the teeth. In these cases, the layers of
the tooth gradually wear down until they reach the pulp.
Finally,
there are also cases in which periodontal disease can lead to pulpal disease so
that the pulp inside the tooth becomes inflamed and ends up dying.
What
types of endodontics are there?
Endodontics
has a double objective. On the one hand, to put an end to the pain suffered by
the patient when the dental pulp becomes inflamed or infected and, on the other
hand, to save the tooth to avoid having to extract it and replace it with a
prosthesis.
Depending
on the number of ducts to be treated, we can distinguish between:
- Single-root
endodontics: they are performed on teeth that have a single root canal, such as
the central incisors, the lateral incisors, and the canines.
-
Biradicular endodontics: when treating pieces that have two canals, such as
premolars and some molars.
-
Multiradicular endodontics: it is performed on molars with three or more
canals.
When
can a root canal not be carried out?
We are
not always going to be able to treat the tooth and save it, since endodontics
may not be an effective treatment in those patients who present severely
damaged teeth.
Nor can
it be treated when there is a perforation of the dental roots or when the
patient has periodontal disease in a very advanced state. The endodontist will
assess each case individually and will be the person in charge of supervising
the feasibility of carrying out a root canal.
